The race for the Smith Performance Specialties Can-Am championship came down to the last event. Three racers arrived at Toronto Motorsports Park on Sunday, October 2 each separated by only one point. They joined nearly 30 Stock and Super Stock cars that turned out for the great weather and track conditions.

Kirk Vanni, looking to capitalize on a win at the Can-Am Labour Day Nationals, and Tom Simon had a shot at taking the top spot from Wally Clark. It all came to a quick end when the three racers lost first round and the top three positions in the points stayed as they were. That makes Wally Clark the Can-Am champion for the second year in a row.

Dan Velenosi beat Lloyd Booker in the final round. Booker made it his second final round of the year after advancing to the final round of the Sunday race of the Can-Am Labour Day Nationals. Velenosi had a better reaction time in the final, and got the win by taking the stripe and running 11.59 on an 11.58 dial.

Velenosi started his day by beating DJ Raiser in the first round and moved on to take out Gus Mantas, Ken Parkman and Richard Mowat.

Velenosi’s final round opponent Lloyd Booker eliminated Jamie Groves in the first round. The second round was a battle of the Dodges as Booker, driving his ’63 Belvedere beat Ken Drinkwater in his  ’63 Dodge 330. Booker was the beneficiary of a third round bye. He then took out Don Cloake in the semi-finals. This race marked the return of veteran Super Stock racer Cloake after a long absence. Cloake ran some impressive 9.0s in his SS/AA ’68 ‘Cuda.

The series will hold its annual Banquet-Brunch Awards ceremony on November 13 at the New Sarum Diner. That is where the series will award its racers with money and products from some of the top names in the racing industry, including Strange Engineering, HTC Coatings, DaSilva Racing and more. Tickets are $15 each. Please reserve your tickets by calling 905-773-5535.
